another commission i did at a show. i think it was san diego.
i hate getting request to draw powerful strong woman..it takes me out of my game....i can do sexy in my sleep now..but strong AND sexy???diff story.... i know its stupid cause its just a comic character that does not exist...but i like to capture essence as often as possible. and with girls like wonderwoman and red sonja, thier essence is power and being a badass, period. so, its harder to do as they are typically not smiling and in some kinda power stance. its particularly hard for me because i will not settle for this. she still has to be sexy in some way...a la anjolina jolie. why settle for one, when u can have both?
so to capture badass...(not the wolverine type where its more animal and furocious than power) i think superman. the spine is always straight up and down..chest up high and the head always leveled. if you tilt the head in anyway...even slightly, u lose power in ur stance. chin up is more majestic, chin down is darker more mysterious..as in how will i kick ur ass today??
this ones pretty straight forward and im kinda happy wih it. oh, and my first time using markers..if only for the background...need to practice.
When i was a kid i had this movie called Red Sonya i had no idea at the time that there was a comic etc for the character.. i feel that you have captured her almost regal power stance. and it is still sexy.. good work..
PS the marker work really makes the image pop out and they still feel like there are part of the sketch

Obviously you're a way awesome comic artist and do some pretty kick ass work otherwise you wouldn't be on Top Cow's payroll. I'm gonna critique anyway based on your commentary and based on the fact that this is a convention sketch.
I love the angle to this. The almost worms eye view just to give her the larger than life effect. I also love the natural feeling of the pose that you gave her. I feel achieving natural looking poses without a reference ends up looking rather stiff and something I haven't mastered yet.
I'm gonna agree with Bakanekonei about the belly button thing. That drives me nuts when I see that and it's not just you. I see it with Stepjan's Witchblade/Devi cover and as beautiful as everything else is he just put that belly button way down there. But that's a minor gripe. I just wanted to rant about belly buttons.
I think powerfully drawn women with some more muscle tone can definitely be sexy. Look at Adam Hughes Wonder Woman drawings. And for a real life example (and your favorite) Look at Jessica Biel's bod. Especially in Blade 3 and Some paparazzi pics of her on the beach. She's got some definite deltoids, biceps, triceps and abs about her and she's still the picture of grace and sex. I think you could've gotten away with adding more definition with Red Sonja's arms and that would've given more of the essence of the character.
It's like when you tried something different with the pirate girl and it turned out so well. I'd say try it next time you draw a super warrior chic that is supposed to have an amazonian physique. It'll probably work out very well for you.
Sorry for writing so much.
Also I have a question. Will you be coming to the Baltimore Comic Convention this year in September?
hehe, im blushing...i had no idea u checked out my stuff...awww...
i do love the hair...ever since i was a kid, i loved hair, i think i was in 2nd grade when i first noticed hair and how beautiful it is.
and i know, i intentionally draw the belly botton like two or three bottons to low. its approx 4 belly bottons down from the waist line. but it looks awkward to me. so i lower it against annatomy rules
