this is another convention exclusive cover of sinbad for zenescope comics

hmm.... where to begin on this one...well, convention covers are always fun, because they have no real direction or purpose...u know that feeling when u are staring at a blank sheet of paper and and u say to urself...ok, i have no idea where to start?? well that was the case here. i could litterally draw any thing i wanted as long as it was a sinbad theme. i had three days to think of what i wanted to do..and i thought of a lot of random things...like a girl licking a sinbad shaped lollypop..or even taking it outside the box like at a ball game or somthing...and on the third day, i was sitting at my desk and i was staring at the blank pg with NOTHING...thats right nothing. its funny...u dont realize that having a direction saves a lot of time. i dont know how gallerie painters do it. complete freedom to paint anything they want. well, as most of u know, i like ass and thongs, so i guess that was a start.

i originally was going to put him behind her and have her hands gently resting on his chest or something, but it felt too boring. and i set my sketchbook down for a min or ten, and stared some more..and my mojo struck.. and i was happy, i bounced up and grabbed my sketchbook and went with the sinbad doll. its not something u see on a cover of a comic and thats what sold it for me...i was so stuck for awhile that my editor raven was throwing ideas at me to help get me started...but i wasnt feeling them.

after the figure was layed out i was stuck again..im like dammit!! where the hell is this girl at??? and where the hell do u sit while squeezing a doll in this era?? do i put her in a palace? a room? a bed room? again complete freedom i guess, can be over whelming. they didnt have a lot of beds then, so i went with the pillows, sheets and typical curtains.

while i drew her shirt...well i think its a shirt... i was thinking, WFT is this eric? and why is it so boring? so i erased it and sat back a lilttle, and said to myself, "complete" freedom. so i started making everything up. i added doodabs here...and weird loops there and crap here..i had shoe lace type crisscross strings on her back and thought it was too boring, so made up this pattern, which is unique and interesting looking...along with the rest of her shirt and the whole damn decore.. and its funny what ur subconcious mind will come up with. i guess, i would like to see a girl in this?? mmm. yes i think i would

i HATE drawing anything symmetrical, im not good at it and i dont have the patience for it. i drew something once and i dont want to draw it again. there are two and a half hanging lamps here..but they are symetrical...which means i actually have to draw the same pattern 5 times....arhh, i hate it. same with the vase on the floor and the wierd wooden screens and wood pattern...things...on the wall behind her.. but in the end, its all worth it, i love detail and thats what it take so i bite the bullet.

when laying out anything, i find that holding the pencil at the top in stead of the bottom allows my wrist to be more relaxed and i can move my hand faster and i find this helps me with the "organic" feel that the placement of all the items and objects have in the background....like the curtians and tassels, and hanging things ( i dont know what they are) it essepcially helped with the pillows. the organic technique helps eliminate the look of everything was "placed" there intentionally and not randomly.

i tried to give her thicker eyebrows and lips to make her look more exotic, not that its really noticable.

had to get this done over night, but i couldnt stop when i originally wanted too cause i was really in the zone and the Mojo was oozing out, i kept putting more and more in it..im pretty happy with the piece...and i cant wait to see what Knee-eye comes up with on the colors

lol...I loved reading your process. makes me feel like I'm not alone in staring at a page for 4 days trying to figure out what to draw.

This drawing is awesome and I saw Nei's colors over it as well.

top notch work.

I think this is really beautiful - I just have one small criticism, and I know well it's near impossible to think of everything - but shouldn't the hanging tassles and chains and things be blowing in the wind a little, maybe even a slight sway in the hanging lanterns? Now to be fair I only noticed this cos I got lost looking at all your amazing details - this is a great piece of work.

I giggled when you mentioned your mojo was oozing. Better have that looked at by a professional. ;)

Seriously though this is an incredible piece, and the outfit she is wearing is gorgeous.
