as with every cover i do.... i layout the idea out in my sketchbook 1st to make sure to work out any kinks out the drawing may have. in this case i was glad i did. as u can see, the center figure (tinkerbell) in the drawing on the far left is very tall. now, i intentionally wanted her to be taller so the composition was balanced out making sure ur eyes goes straight to her.
one needs to make sure to have a 3rd eye when looking at ur own work but its hard to do....so my tried and true trick of stepping away from it for a few hrs has not let me down in many cases. after i came back to look at it when i finished eating, i saw that she was WAY too tall. she looked like an avatar character. since shes a fairy im sure i coulda gotten away with it. but it really bothered me especially when tiger lilly (right) was kinda squatting down made her look abnormally tall.
with most cover drawings, the girls always have to be james bond bomb shells. its really hard to turn in a ugly chick to ur editors. believe me i've tried and each time ive had to change it. one time...they changed it behind my back. i was SO pissed. i drew a "Whooville" type nose on a cover and they photo shopped it back into a "prettier" spot without telling me!!! so one of the few ways to make three girls look diff is to ethnic them up a bit. i pictured Wendy the girl on the left to be more of a southern bell and have freckles and bouncy blond hair. and the center girl more of a albino asian..... and tiger ...well indian of course. i gave her a larry bird type nose.
im shocked they let me draw this one..... the naughty version came close to lesbian three way. in the past if ever i drew hands this close to a nekked crotch they shot it down faster than virgin stroking to bust his load!!!
i was asked to do a naughty and nice version as usual. so i always have to draw then naked in the final version and add clothes on later.
I loved reading your description of the piece. It's really taught me a lot. Particularly the bit about walking away from the image for a few hours and then trying to gain a "3rd eye" perspective on it. That's so hard for me to do, as I'm rubbish at being able to look at my work from an "outside perspective". So many times in the past I'll create something and be like "YES! This one is one of my best, it'll get a lot of faves for sure!". Then no one will like it or comment on it. And the opposite is also true, I'll post something I think is pretty crappy and people love it. lol I wish I knew how to develop a better 3rd eye perspective so I can actually be able to critique my own work and tell more about what is working and what isn't. Maybe walking away from it for a couple hours, like you suggested, will help.
Thanks for taking the time to write that up and give us a sneak peak at your process! That's nice of you to do!
Sucks to hear that the industry tells you to make cheesecake. Here I was thinking I'd draw female characters with a bit of dignity. Guess I'll just have to do it for my own edification. Great art man. Here's to hoping you get to do it like you like one day.
